This new Engel U-Boat model won't leave you wishing for more!
The hull unit is of the same high quality as the rest of the Engel KG model series made from hand laminated fiberglass and is very rigid. All other fittings and accessories such as the conning tower, diving planes, and rudders are made from resin and are highly detailed. The net cutter, reeling, and many other brass parts are pre-assembled and already soldered.
The model is outfitted with a radial division to allow the inner section (so-called technical frame or Tech-Rack) to be inserted. It is made of CNC cut PVC, which allows for easy and fast assembly. This entire frame is reinforced with alloy rods for additional support.
The WTC is a tube fabricated from 3mm (approx.1/8") PVC material and transparent.
The diving system consists of two piston tanks (with 750ml volume each) and a new electronic switch unit which allows proportional and individual control of each tank. This system also features three fail safe devices (max. depth via pressure switch, loss of signal and battery monitor).
The entire model's power system is based on 12 Volt.
All screws, bolts, nuts and struts are made of stainless steel, brass or alloy and are therefore rust proof.
The model is offered as a complete kit just like all other Engel KG submarines. To get it ready to sail, all what's needed are the usual R/C components such as a remote control system, servos, speed controllers, and, of course, rechargeable batteries.

The LAFAYETTE SSBN-616 was laid down 17 January 1961 by Electric Boat Co., Division of General Dynamics, Groton, CN/USA and launched 8 May 1962. The Lafayette had her place in the Navy's expanding "Polaris Fleet" during the 1960's. While still in service in March 1991 the vessel was decommissioned on the August 12 of that year.Click Here for info on the real SSBN 616
This static diving model of the Lafayette is an absolute novelty with respect to pre-fabrication and content of the kit.
HullThe hull of the model is made of glass fiber reinforced (GR) Epoxy. The main hull consists of two parts, the bow and aft section which are combined with a bayonet lock ring made of alloy and sealed with an o-ring.
The rocket hatch section is also made of GR Epoxy and shows finely scribed detail.
Conning tower with periscope parts, rudders and dive planes are all cast in resin to allow easy assembly.
Inner SectionThe inner section (so-called technical frame) is made of CNC cut PVC allowing easy and fast assembly. All parts have their set location and a very good fit. Furthermore, the frame is reinforced by alloy bars with threaded ends which are screwed against or into the CNC cut bulkheads. The rear (main) bulk head is cast in 12 mm thick resin and incorporates all necessary connections for the screwed-on alloy bars, main drive as well as two water in-/outlets for the Piston Tank and the Pressure Switch.
Diving SystemThe center of the inner section consists of a single Piston Tank type TA825-12 (825ml volume with Auto Trim, 12V) which comes pre-mounted with the necessary bulkhead on each end.The Piston Tank is controlled by the electronic Ballast Tank Switch BTS which is has its place at the aft section of the technical frame. The BTS incorporates a Pressure Switch as security device (located at the bow of the frame) which limits the maximum depth to about 1.8 meters. The BTS also features a second security device, the so-called "low battery monitor" which forces the model to emerge should the voltage of the battery drop below 9 Volt for longer than 6 seconds. The 12 Volt drive of the Piston Tank runs smoothly and allows the tank to be flooded fully after 18 seconds.
Main DriveThe model has a 12 Volt direct drive motor. This is attached to a specially fabricated alloy mount which is fitted to the main bulk head and sealed with an o-ring. The coupling connecting the motor to the prop shaft (stainless steel) runs within this mount, closed-off by a shaft seal. The kit also includes a 6-blade scimitar prop made of brass. This set-up allows a speed of up to 12 km/h (approx. 7.5 mph, submerged).

Engel Diving Systems are based on an operational principle that has already existed since 1850. It enables model U-boats (submarines) to use the static diving method up to a depth of 10 metres. The pump mechanism and the ballast tank form a compact unit, the so-called piston tank, often also simply referred to as ballast tank.
A piston tank consists of a cylinder, a piston, a piston rod with thread, a motor with gears, levers as well as multiple end switches. By adjusting the piston in the cylinder, the water is sucked in or discharged, whereby the electric drive allows for a sensitive metering of the water quantity (filling volume). Capacity The 750 System with 1.5 litres of total volume (consisting of 2 piston tanks with 750 ml each) is generally adequate for lifting models of up to 2 metres in length out of the water up to the waterline, so that an original looking image can be achieved. For smaller models, the 500 System with 1 litre of total volume (consisting of 2 piston tanks with 500 ml each) is appropriate. For models with larger displacement
The relatively sizable volume of each piston tank causes a high level of buoyancy which, among other things, offers the advantage of a model being able to, for example, tear itself away with its own strength if it should become entangled with water plants and is subsequently able to resurface undamaged.Furthermore, the large volume also allows for the mounting of mock-ups (such as a sea monster, shark fin or similar) or other auxiliary systems (e.g. underwater camera) on the hull.In addition, diving systems with AutoTrim (type TEA) allow simple "over trimming" which makes it possible to ground the model (park mode), whereby this position is limited in relation to the capacity of the receiver battery.
Operational SafetyA decisive advantage of this diving technology is its highly reliable performance. The discharge pressure is sufficient for a diving depth of more than 20 meters and is therefore 10 times higher than is required for the normal operating depth of approximately 2 metres.Within this operating range, only a slight demand is placed on the system, resulting in a very minimal use of electricity and yielding a high level of operational safety. Moreover, since there are two independent piston tanks belonging to a system, a double safety factor exists.A further considerable advantage is the system's insensitivity to pollution. Even when pure sludge is sucked in, the ballast tanks will continue to work trouble-free since everything that is sucked in is also discharged. The entire system requires almost no maintenance. Servicing is limited to the occasional lubricating of the gears with a few drops of oil.The operation of the system requires a hermetically sealed hull. Air displaced from the cylinder is compressed and stored within the hull so that excess pressure develops, which in turn causes increased compression strength of the hull's casing. Since no venting and pressure equalization are required, no air exchange takes place and no water condensation can develop.
ControlsThe switch unit in connection with a pressure switch form the heart of the diving system. The switch unit serves for the controlling of each ballast tank and also takes over the automatic emergency surfacing function as soon as the pressure switch determines that the model is sinking below its maximum operating depth of approx. 2 metres. The pressure switch incorporates an additional safety function: As in the diving mode the ballast tanks are flooded (filled) the pressure within the pressure proof compartment inside the hull increases. If the pressure switch now senses a decrease of pressure within the hull resulting from a leakage, the diving mode is immediately stopped and the emerging mode is initiated.Engel Diving Systems are available in the following versions: TEA system but we do keep the Static Depth controller so as to upgrade to a TEAS system• Type TAE with Auto Stop AND Auto Trim Electronic• Type TAES with Auto Stop AND Auto Trim Electronic PLUS Static Depth Controller
TEA Unit TEAS Unit
Switch Unit TAE -Electronic- is used for controlling piston tanks with AutoStop AND AutoTrim. The TAE is electronically controlled and is plugged directly into the receiver. The switch unit is ready soldered and includes a pressure switch.
The TAE unit features 2 Fail Safe devices. The switching takes place after a short delay of some 1/10th second to filter short fail pulses. The "on" and "off" points of a relais differ a little (socalled hysteresis). This prevents the relais from flickering. If the signal is lost - due to great depth or other circumstances - the TAE unit will switch to "blow". This failsafe function can be delayed by 4 or 7 seconds so that not every twitch can ruin the subs trim.
A pressure switch is also included as a second and very important safety device limiting the operational depth of the model to approx. 1.8 meters. This safety device is highly recommended as the switch also senses any pressure drop inside the pressure proof cell of the model due to a leak.
In addition the unit is equipped with a double set of fuses which secures the unit from being destroyed due to a short circuit. Thereby, the operational circuit is kept seperately from the control circuit. Moreover, this allows the TAE to be run on 6 to 48 Volts (or more).
The unit should be operated by a proportional R/C channel (fill/stop/empty) but DOES NOT require an additional R/C switch channel (such as switch unit LTA).
The TAE unit can be used for controlling a single or a pair of piston tanks and can be operated on 6 to 48 Volts.
Switch Unit TAE includes:- Switch Unit TAE ready soldered- Pressure Switch- Connection leads- Spare fuses (2)- Instructions and wiring diagrams
The TAES is based on switch unit TAE with all its safety functions but further incorporates a Static Depth Controller.
The Static Depth Control Unit is already mounted on top of the TAE, thus, ready-to-run. A pressure sensor is located on this second switch board which supports the "state of suspension" of the model during the static dive mode (model submerged but not moving forward/backward).
Once the model has submerged to a certain depth the Static Depth Controller can be activated via a slider switch (or rotary switch) on the transmitter. The pressure sensor now keeps the model at the depth at which the TAES has been activated by pumping water in or out the piston tanks.
Please note: In order to receive best performance of the TAES (with only limited stroke of the model) a very good trim is essential. An only poorly trimmed model will cause a relatively large stroke (the model submerging and emerging erratically in the worst case).
The Static Depth Controller is also available as an upgrade for the TAE unit (see Upgrades Item-No. 1585-TAES).
The TAES can control, just as the TAE, 1 or 2 piston tanks (performs better with a pair of tanks, though) and can be operated on 6 to 48 Volts (or more).
Switch Unit TAES includes:- Switch Unit TAE with Static Depth Controller, ready mounted- Pressure Switch- Connection leads- Spare fuses (2)- Instructions and wiring diagrams~~~2465~2470~~
