Bismarck~Bismarck
One the most famous battleships of the second world war named after Otto von Bismarck
The contract to build her was placed on 16 November 1935 with the Blohm & Voss, Hamburg. As New Construction "F" later named Bismarck. The keel for Bismarck was laid on 1 July 1936.
It took 30 months before she was launched on 14 February 1939 by Frau Dorothea von Loewenfeld, the granddaughter of Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. At 1334 the hull of Bismarck slowly glided into the water.
The Bismarck was commissioned 18 months later on 24 August 1940 and placed under the command of Kapitän zur See (Captain) Ernst Lindemann.

King George The V~The King George V class was built in an era where the aircraft carrier supplanted the battleship.
But nonetheless King George V, Prince of Wales, and Duke of York all saw the battleship-to-battleship action that they were designed for.
The KGV and the Prince of Wales both fought the Bismarck in late May 1941, while the Duke of York duelled with the German battlecruiser Scharnhorst in the battle of North Cape, contributing to the latter's sinking in December 1943.

Price of Wales~HMS Prince of Wales, a 35,000-ton King George V class battleship built Birkenhead, England, was completed in March 1941.
In late May, while still not fully operational, she was sent into action with the German battleship Bismarck and received significant damage from heavy gunfire. Following repairs,
Prince of Wales carried Prime Minister Winston Churchill across the Atlantic to Newfoundland. There, on 9-12 August, Churchill joined U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt for the Atlantic Charter conference, the first meeting between the two English-speaking leaders of what was emerging as the "Grand Alliance" against the Axis powers.
Following her return to British waters, Prince of Wales went to the Mediterranean, where she successfully engaged Italian planes off Malta in late September. Sent to the Far East with the battlecruiser HMS Repulse to counter the swiftly developing Japanese threat in the region,
she arrived on 2 December 1941. On 8 December, the day of the Pearl Harbor Raid on the other side of the International Date Line, the Japanese landed in northern Malaya. Prince of Wales, Repulse and four destroyers were sent to attack the invasion force. After finding no targets, the British ships were returning to Singapore when, late in the morning of 10 December,
they were attacked by a strong force of Japanese high-level bombers and torpedo planes. With no friendly planes to protect them, both heavy ships were hit several times. Repulse sank at about 1230.
Prince of Wales capsized and followed her to the bottom less than an hour later. The first capital ships to be sunk by air attack while operating on the high seas, their loss further shocked a naval world already stunned by the events at Pearl Harbor only a few days earlier.

BB-63 Battleship Missouri~The Iowa Class Battleships were the largest and final great battleships of the US Navy.
They included the BB-61 Iowa, the BB-62 New Jersey, and the third ship, the famous BB-63 Battleship Missouri.
These ships, which boasted an amazing 212,000hp allowing a 33knots max speed, were armed with massive 40.6cm main guns. The Iowa Class ships stretched 270.4m but were relatively thin, with only 33m max length, enabling these ships to pass through the Panama Canal.
Being commissioned in June 1944, the USS Missouri took part in many operations during the Pacific War including bombardments on Japanese mainland and capital.
On September 2, 1945, the treaty for the unconditional surrender of Japanese forces was signed onboard the deck of the historical USS Missouri. With the outbreak of the Korean War in June 1950 the USS Missouri was deployed again with the other Iowa Class Battleships for fire support.
The USS Missouri was relegated to reserve duty in 1955, but became subject to complete renovation and modernization in 1986 when she was fitted with the latest in electronic weapon systems, cruise missiles and other improvements. In 1991, the USS Missouri was deployed to fight in the Gulf War. Finally, in 1993, after about a half-century of service, this historical Battleship was at last retired.

USS Enterprise~The supercarrier, USS Enterprise (CVN-65), formerly CVA(N)-65, is the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and the eighth U.S. Naval vessel to bear the name.
Like her predecessor of World War II fame, she is nicknamed the “Big E” and her name is well known throughout the world. At 1,123 feet (342.3 m), she remains the longest naval vessel in the world,
though her 93,500 tons are surpassed by the Nimitz-class. She is also the only aircraft carrier to house more than two nuclear reactors. Enterprise’s eight-reactor propulsion design was rather conservative, with each A2W reactor taking the place of one boiler.

Yamato Japanese battleship~Yamato, lead ship of a class of two 65,000-ton (over 72,800-tons at full load) battleships, was built at Kure, Japan. She and her sister, Musashi were by far the largest battleships ever built, even exceeding in size and gun caliber (though not in weight of broadside) the U.S. Navy's abortive Montana class. Their nine 460mm (18.1-inch) main battery guns, which fired 1460kg (3200 pound) armor piercing shells, were the largest battleship guns ever to go to sea, and the two ships' scale of armor protection was also unsurpassed.

Commissioned in December 1941, just over a week after the start of the Pacific war, Yamato served as flagship of Combined Fleet commander Isoroku Yamamoto during the critical battles of 1942. During the following year, she spent most of her time at Truk, as part of a mobile naval force defending Japan's Centeral Pacific bases. Torpedoed by USS Skate (SS-305) in December 1943, Yamato was under repair until April 1944, during which time her anti-aircraft battery was considerably increased. She then took part in the Battle of the Philippine Sea in June and the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October. During the latter action, she was attacked several times by U.S. Navy aircraft, and fired her big guns in an engagement with U.S. escort carriers and destroyers off the island of Samar.

Yamato received comparatively light damage during the Leyte Gulf battle, and was sent home in November 1944. Fitted with additional anti-aircraft machine guns, she was based in Japan during the winter of 1944-45. Attacked by U.S. Navy carrier planes in March 1945, during raids on the Japanese home islands, she was again only lightly damaged. The following month, she was assigned to take part in the suicidal "Ten-Go" Operation, a combined air and sea effort to destroy American naval forces supporting the invasion of Okinawa. On 7 April 1945, while still some 200 miles north of Okinawa, Yamato was attacked by a massive force of U.S. carrier planes and sunk.

GATO-class Submarine~After the US Pacific fleet had been seriously weakened at Pearl Harbor, at the beginning of the war in the Pacific much of the responsibility in the battle against the Japanese expeditionary forces rested on the shoulders of the American submariners.
The submarines of the Gato Class were large fleet submarines that had been specially developed for use in the wide expanses of the Pacific Ocean. Due to their size and equipment they could remain in non-stop service for 75 days. Between 1940 and 1944, 77 Gatos were build at four different shipyards. Together with the Balao and the Trench Class they formed the backbone of the US submarine fleet.
Most of these subs went to the Pacific, but a few were also used in the Atlantic. These submarines were extremely successful. Not only did they sink a large number of irreplaceable freighters and tankers, but they also decimated the Imperial naval fleet. The most grievous losses were the aircraft carriers Shokaku, Taiyo, Unyo and Taiho. Developed for use in the expanses of the Pacific, the Gato was much larger than for example the German type VII submarine.
It had a length of 95 m, a beam of 8.20 m and a draught of 4.60 m. Its displacement was 1825 tons surfaced and 2410 tons dived. The diesel engine gave it a speed of 20.75 knots on the surface.

German Fast Attack Type S100 WWII Craft&Flak Armament~Due to the absolute superiority of the Allied materiel at sea and in the air, from 1944 onwards warfare at sea became ever more difficult.
The areas patrolled by the high-speed motor torpedo boats, the English Channel and also the Baltic, were subject to ever more frequent air attacks by a numerically superior enemy who specifically hunted high-speed torpedo boats.
Consequently the efforts of the crews were primarily concentrated on higher fire power and speed as well as more effective air defence, that was considerably improved by the feared four-barrelled Flak C38 anti-aircraft gun.
At the beginning of the war the Friedrich Lürssen/Vegesack shipyards developed this fast, type of seaworthy torpedo boat that maintained its performance even in heavy seas, had brilliant manoeuvrability and continued to be built until the end of the war without major modifications. These torpedo boats, also known as S-Boote, generally proved their worth on escort and protection duties, minefield reconnaissance patrols and above all in combating surface units and enemy submarines.
They operated chiefly off the Dutch and French coasts, the English coast and the Channel and also the North Sea and the Baltic and were also used in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. The final version was the Type S-100 that was produced after 1943 and can be regarded as the best high-speed torpedo boat of its period.

German Fast Attack S100~Swarms of them emerged from the morning mist, launched their lightening attack and disappeared as quickly as they had come.
They were called the "Greyhound of the Sea". At the beginning of World War II the Friedrich Lürssen shipyard, Vegesack carried out successful pioneer work and developed a fast, seaworthy type of speedboat that was capable of top speed even in heavy seas, had brilliant manoeuvrability and was built until the end of the war without major modifications.
These speedboats, also called S-Boats, generally proved their worth on escort and security missions, sea reconnaissance, mine warfare and in particular in combat against enemy submarines and surface units. They operated primarily off the Dutch and French coasts, along the English coast and in the Channel as well as in the North Sea and the Baltic and were also used in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.
The ultimate variant to be operational in significant numbers was the so-called S-Boat type S-100, which was produced from 1943 onwards and is reputed to be the best fast patrol boat of its time.
The S-100 class was also called the "calotte", as it had a rounded armoured bridge made of welded segments (approx 10-12 mm armour plated steel) It was driven by 3 Daimler-Benz MB 511-V engines giving it an overall capacity of approx. 7500 hp and developing an outstanding speed of 43.5 knots (briefly accelerating to 48 knots).

Torpedo Boat PT 117~The PT 117 belonged to the smallest, fastest and most manoeuvrable combat vessels of the US Marine Cops.
The patrol torpedo boats also known as mosquitos because they "stung" the enemy at high speed. Four 2500hp heavy-duty supercharged engines (12 cyl. Packard) gave the boat a maximum speed of 50 knots.
In addition, these boats featured specially designed hulls (50t displacement) allowing the boats to glide over the water. Fitted with 4 torpedos, 4 MGs and an anti-aircraft gun, they were a serious threat to the enemy especially in the restricted island waters of the Pacific.
However, designed for operation in qualm waters and a high fuel consumption proved major disadvantages.

The Flower Class corvettes will always be associated with the Battle of the North Atlantic, even thought they were also used in all theatres of war in World War II.
Alongside other escort ships she bore the main burden of the battle against the German submarines. The escort ships of this class were derived from the collaboration between the British Admiralty and the Smiths Dock Company, which in 1938 had a successful design for a commercial whaler called the Southern Pride. The main feature of this original design was that in accordance with merchant shipping practice it could easily be built in many small British dockyards and its basic engines could be handled by civilian dockyards.
Sixty Flower Class corvettes had been ordered before war broke out and by the end of 1940 at total of 141 of the original design had been ordered. The first vessel (launched on 24.1.1940) was completed in 5 Months, the subsequent ones at a rate of one every twenty three days. Once it had been decided that corvettes were no longer to be used as coastal escort ship, but on the high seas, some modifications had to be made.
Later these vessels were given a different hull with extended forecastle that improved their thrust and overhang to protect them against the Atlantic seas. In the course of the war the corvettes were equipped, among other things, with radar, more and more powerful anti-aircraft weapon.Total build: 256, Displacement: 940 tons, capacity: 2750 shp, speed: 16 knots, crew: 47 men

DGzRS Arkona~DGzRS Arkona Gale-force winds of over 100 km/h, giant waves towering over five metres, heavy rain and icy cold - such conditions are nothing unusual for the motor lifeboats of the DGzRS(German sea rescue association). In the course of the 130 years since the DGzRS was founded, its boats have rescued more than 64,000 people from distress or danger at sea, often in the most adverse working conditions. The rescue fleet comprises a total 57 boats (1999 figure). One of its most high-performance and modern SAR vessels is the ARKONA; stationed in Sassnitz (NE German state of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania on the Baltic coast), it has a fire extinguishing capacity of 36,000 litres/min. A special structural design gives the ARKONA outstanding nautical capabilities in ground swell and breakers and - even in the most difficult circumstances - allows it to be manoeuvred alongside ships in distress. The ARKONA is powered by an MTU diesel engine with 1,200 kW(1,632 h.p.) and two MWM diesel engines each with 574 kW (781 h.p.). Speed: 24 knots (approx. 44.5 km/h);range: 2,300 nautical miles. It has a crew of 9, 4 of whom are permanently on board. The two remote-controlled fire extinguisher monitors located on the upper navigating stand are capable of directing around 2,200 m3 of water per hour over a distance of about 130 m right into a fire source. Two further monitors can be connected up for discharging foam compound; these are smaller with a capacity of 144 m3 each per hour.

Sea rescue cruiser DGzRS HERMANN MARWEDE~The HERMANN MARWEDE is one of the most up-to-date ships of its type in the world and is the largest sea rescue cruiser ever put into service in Germany. The ship was launched in the summer of 2003 and is stationed on the Island of Helgoland in the North Sea. Since they were founded in 1865 the DGzRS lifeboat service has rescued over 72,000 people from life-threatening danger and saved them from a watery grave.
With innumerable technical means of assistance for seagoing vessels of all kinds the life-savers were also able to contribute to the prevention of serious accidents. The work of the life-savers is financed exclusively by charitable gifts and voluntary donations.
The new cruiser is part of a concept developed by the leaders, navigators and technicians at the DGzRS, to enable the crews to continue to fulfil the tasks it has set itself and keep abreast of changing conditions when rescuing people in peril at sea.
For the future the meteorologists and climatological researchers predict frequent and more intensive periods of bad weather with prolonged episodes of high winds and storms.
Add to this within the next years an expected 50% growth in cargo movements in the Northern European shipping sector plus an increase in sea traffic in the North Sea and the Baltic areas. Already the Baltic ferries are used by over 50 million passengers per year.

German submarine VIIC/41 Atlantic version~The first of a total of 91 type VII C/41 submarines went into service in the summer of 1943.
At that time the operating conditions for the submarine crews had totally changed. The tactic of "hunting in packs" used in 1941-42 only rarely led to the successful tracking of convoys and the sinking of individual ships.
Modern escort protection forces were successful in shielded the ships and special sub-chaser fighter planes widely patrolled the sea areas where there were submarines. In order to be better able to defend themselves on the surface against surprise attacks from the air, the VII C/41s received an enlarged fin superstructure known as the "large glasshouse".
The so-called fin IV had aft on its upper platform two 20 mm twin anti-aircraft guns and on a lower platform one 37 mm M42U anti-aircraft cannon. Another feature of these submarines was a snorkel mast that could be brought up from the deck when surfaced to take in fresh air and let out the waste air.
Thus the accumulators could also be operated at higher speed under water and with a full load in daytime. There were 5-man life rafts stored in four water-tight containers on the fore-deck. Thanks to the improvements to structural steel, submarine VII C/41 could dive down to 250 m.
With losses of 44 submarines, by the end of the Battle of the Atlantic, type VII C/41 submarines had damaged or sunk 38 Allied ships with a total GRT of 138,622. 1444 members of VII C/41 crews were killed in battle or in accidents.

Is the best known German submarine from World War II. It was built in large numbers and upgraded several times. This type represents the ultimate high point of the submarine era. Equipped with four bow and one stern torpedo the VII-C was a fearsome weapon.
The task assigned to the German submarines was trade warfare. They were designed to disrupt England's supply lines and innumerable sunken ships bear witness to that.
The "Grey Wolves" of the Atlantic made war on escort convoys and hunted in packs. Accustomed to success, however, the period from 1943 was devastating for the German submarines: the hunters became the hunted. New search equipment tracked the German submarines mercilessly and turned them into steel coffins for innumerable German submarine crews.
The type VII-C submarine illustrates the rise and fall of German submarine warfare. Technical data: length 67.1 m, two 2,800 hp diesel engines gave a top speed of 17.6 knots surfaced, 2 battery driven electric motors gave a top speed of 7.6 knots dived, minimum depth 100 m, crew approx. 44 men.

At 150,000 gross tons, the Cunard liner Queen Mary 2 is the largest, longest, widest, tallest passenger ship ever built.
She accommodates 2,620 passengers, is home of 1,253 crew members and features sweeping staircases, expansive promenades and luxurious accommodation - three-quarters of the cabins have private balconies.
The Queen Mary 2 also features ten dining areas, the world's first floating planetarium, the largest ballroom at sea and the biggest wine collection afloat.
Her total length is 345 meters (1132 feet) and at a height of 72 meters (236 feet) with 14 passenger decks, she is taller than the Statue of Liberty and the Tower of London. She is also the first ship of her type built since Queen Elizabeth 2, being a true liner rather than a cruise ship. With her long, slender and exceptionally strong hull, deep draught and powerful engines, Queen Mary 2 has been designed to cross the North Atlantic between Europe (Southampton, England) and North America (New York) in six days.
The concept for Queen Mary 2 was born from the purchase of the legendary Cunard Line by Carnival Corporation in May 1998. Carnival's Chairman Micky Arison initiated the new ship study. Carnival's Chief Naval Architect Stephen Payne and Cunard Line's Director of Newbuildings Gerry Ellis developed the design.
After a two year design period the contract was placed on 6 November 2000 with Alstom Chantiers De L'Atlantique, St. Nazaire France.Very detailed kit!

The "Queen of the Sea" was to carry 1,316 passengers from Southampton to New York for the White Star Line. During the night at about 23.40 hours, at latitude 41.54 degrees north and longitude 50.24 degrees west in the Atlantic, the British steamship hit an iceberg that tore a 100 m gash in her starboard side.
When the Titanic sank at about 0.20 hours on 15th April 1,503 of the 2,206 people on board lost their lives. The 46,329 BRT vessel had a length of 267 m and a displacement of 66,000 tons. With her 9 decks and in particular her 15 watertight bulkheads, the ship was considered to be unsinkable.
The Titanic steams on in the popular imagination, not least thanks to the James Cameron film that won 11 Oscars. Decades after she went down the passenger liner has lost none of her attraction. When the wreck was discovered in 1985, one question was finally answered: the ship had in fact broken in two.

When cargo vessels come into harbour having covered thousands of sea miles, theystill have a difficult stretch ahead of them. This is where the harbour tug boatcome into their own, take over command and tow these gigantic ships safely alongside the quay. The tug boats do not carry any cargo, but serve to tow large tankers and cargo vessels. These small, robust but very manoeuverable boats have very powerful engines developing from 250 to thousands of horsepower. The bridge is designed as a high superstructure to give them a good panoramic view, that will enable them to do their job properly and guarantee a safe passage through the confined space of the harbour. The bow, stern and side walls are usually reinforced and equipped with additional protective matting.

It was in 1859 that the first oil well was successfully drilled underground to a depth of 21 m by Colonel Drake in Pennsylvania, USA.
It was not until 70 years later that the first hazardous steps were taken from land into water. In 1927 the first offshore drilling was done in California to a depth of only 6 m. The oil policy of the OPEC countries made undersea oil exploration and production much more interesting.
There are now about 380 offshore drilling rigs in operation world wide. In addition to off the coasts of North and Central America, a second major field was found in the North Sea.
In 1975 the Forties Field went into production. The substructure of the North Cormorant was towed to its site 160 km north east of the Shetland Isles at the beginning of 1980. When it was finally anchored to the seabed with 32 gigantic steel pins it had covered a record distance of 1400 km by sea from the French shipyard at Cherbourg.
The whole drilling platform was installed in the period from May to August 1981 and went into production in the December. The oil and gas extracted is transported to dry land in pipelines. The deck of the platform has a total area of 4,000 my. The gigantic substructure with a height of 170 m and a weight of 24,500 tones is bigger than all its predecessors in the history of North Sea oil.
While it was being built the North Cormorant was home to 240 men. Now it is operated by over 100 seamen in all weathers.Highly detailed model!!!

New Product Item~During the Second World War the U.S. Navy deployed a large amount of three types of motor torpedo boats: the Higgins measuring 78 feet and ELCO measuring 77 and 80 feet. Every model could be distinguished from the others, apart from by length, by configuration, weapons and various other details. The 80 foot ELCOs represented the most numerous class: they were realised in five series, for a total of about 300 examples Built in mahogany and pushed by three 1,350cv Packard 4M-2500 engines (taken to 1,500 in the latest series), these vessels easily exceeded 40 knots. The equipment and weapons were constantly updated and improved thanks to experience acquired in the field and the progressive change of role: with the progress of the conflict, in fact, the PT Boats left the original task of attacking and cutting off the traffic, taking on the role of gunships and operating in the proximity of the coast or in channels.
